John Holt, the head mechanic, observed that the engine oil turned completely black and oxidized within six months, prompting interest in a suitable gear oil for Meritor axles’ differentials and hubs.
Bill Guynes, a lubrication consultant, recommended Monolec Ultra® Engine Oil (8800) for improved fuel efficiency and reduced wear, and Duolec® Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricant (1605) for Meritor differentials and hubs, after reviewing ThermoKing’s specifications.
John Holt saves money by changing the oil only once a year and using Monolec 8800, which prevents seal leaks and keeps the engine exceptionally clean, as confirmed by his 35 years of mechanical experience.
I have never seen a cleaner engine in all of my 35 years of mechanical experience.
- John HoltNorco Corporation, located in Saginaw, Texas, is a trucking operation that serves frozen food companies, both locally and throughout the United States. It has been an LE customer since 1996.
They own approximately 80 refrigerated trailers equipped with Thermo-King refrigerating units. They run these as well as lease them out to owner/operator services. These refrigeration units are subjected to a variety of operating temperatures and conditions, depending on the area of the country and the season.
They were previously using a combination of commercial grade synthetic and mineral 30W and 15W-40 engine oils. John Holt, head mechanic, changed the oil every six months and noted it would be completely black and oxidized when drained. They were also interested in a gear oil for the differentials and hubs in Meritor (formerly Rockwell) axles.
Bill Guynes, LE lubrication consultant, reviewed ThermoKing specifications and learned that the manufacturer specifies 15W-40 engine oil for its units. He then recommended Monolec Ultra® Engine Oil (8800), which is for heavy-duty, long-drain service in diesel and gasoline engines. It improves fuel efficiency, reduces wear and provides all-season, all-weather performance. Monolec 8800 is made from select paraffinic base oils and contains Monolec®, LE’s exclusive wear-reducing additive. Bill also recommended Duolec® Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricant (1605) for the Meritor differentials and hubs.
John Holt still changes the filter every six months, but changes the oil only once per year, doubling their savings. They originally started using Monolec® GFS Engine Oil (8440), but Bill Guynes recommended they go with Monolec 8800 late in 1997, because they needed an oil that would work better in winter weather. John says they also have not seen the seals leak as they did with the commercial product. After running the LE Engine Oil, John Holt disassembled the engine and stated, “I have never seen a cleaner engine in all of my 35 years of mechanical experience.” Owner A.G. Hollenstine said, “We are very happy with the LE oil. LE has great products.”
