Challenge

In 1978, the New Castle County Parks Department faced frequent bearing failures in their Mott 72 inch flail mowers due to melting grease, costing $768 annually for bearings and significant downtime, prompting them to seek assistance from LE.

LE solution

Switching to Almaplex® Industrial Lubricant (1275) is advised by the local LE lubrication consultant for its superior performance in challenging conditions involving moisture and high temperatures.

Results

By switching to Almaplex 1275 and Duolec 1608, the County Parks Department has extended lubrication cycles, nearly eliminated bearing failures, and resolved mower damage issues, enhancing equipment reliability and reducing maintenance costs.

I am very happy with LE products and services and I feel they are extremely cost effective.

Application

The New Castle County Parks Department – Operations / Maintenance Division was experiencing a number of problems with lost bearings on flail mowers.

icon

Challenge

The New Castle County Parks Department contacted LE in 1978 to help with these mowers. Bearing grease in the Mott 72 inch flail mowers were only lasting one to two days, especially in the summer, when the grease would melt and run out leaving the bearings unprotected. Maintaining over 30 mowers, the maintenance department was replacing an average of 48 bearings per year. The cost of these bearings is approximately $16, and it requires approximately 2 man-hours to repair each mower. Quite often the equipment was down for as long as half a day.

LE Solution

The local LE lubrication consultant recommended changing to Almaplex® Industrial Lubricant (1275). This lubricant is very effective in severe operations caused by moisture and high temperatures.

Results

Since converting to Almaplex 1275, the County Parks Department has been able to increase their lubrication cycles from every four hours to once a day, and have all but eliminated bearing failures.

The county also uses Duolec® Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricant (1608) in their 15 ft. Woods rotary mowers. These mowers are used in the parks and at the airport. Using a commercial grade lubricant, they were experiencing top bearing failures which caused the blades and shaft to fall out of the mower. This would occasionally cause the blade and shaft to knock off the entire gear casing, causing extensive damage to the mower.

The LE lubrication consultant recommended changing to Duolec 1608 because of its excellent EP characteristics. It is very adhesive, protects against corrosive wear and reduces overheating. While using the commercial grade lubricant, top bearings would fail on an average of twice a year. Since changing to Duolec 1608, there have been no lubricant related failure problems in this application.

Nutrigent Industrial Cleaner (2100) is used as an effective cleaner for many different applications. It is highly concentrated and when mixed with water or solvent is very effective in dissolving dirt and gum.

Monolex® Penetrating Oil & Lubricant (2059) is used as for their penetrating lubricant and Almagard® Vari-Purpose Lubricant (3752) is used as their general purpose grease.
