Grinding, pulverizing, breaking – open gears can take a beating
Large open gears take a severe beating on a daily basis. Challenging conditions include outdoor environment, extended service operation, dust, silica, water, extreme heat and extreme pressures. Open gear lubricants must be specially formulated to keep equipment operating at maximum efficiency. Whether you operate a ball mill, rod mill, breaker mill, or kiln, Lubrication Engineers Pyroshield® line of heavy-duty synthetic open gear lubricants can help protect your valuable equipment and keep it running harder and lasting longer. If you are interested in making your large open gears last longer, lowering the amount of lubricant you use, and reducing overall maintenance expenditures, then we have the solutions for you.
Pyroshield open gear lubricants provide extreme pressure protection
The superiority of Pyroshield open gear lubricants has been long established by their performance in cement kilns, metal and mineral mining operations, and coal power generation facilities all over the world. Pyroshield meets or exceeds all relevant manufacturer specifications for open gear applications. With its high film strength and viscosity index, Pyroshield has an exceptional ability to protect open gears from extreme pressures, heavy loads, high temperatures and temperature-based fluctuations. It is also easy to pump – particularly important for use in automatic lubrication systems.
No shutdown required when converting open gears to Pyroshield
Pyroshield does not require the equipment to be shut down during the conversion process. Even better, LE’s certified independent consultants can be there to assist you during the conversion process. Pyroshield can be applied manually or through automatic spray systems and clings tenaciously to the gear. Pyroshield appears translucent in use, allowing for the visual inspection of the open gear.
Pyroshield contains Almasol
Almasol® is LE’s proprietary solid film additive adding extreme heat stability, anti-wear protection and extreme pressure properties to Pyroshield products. Originally developed for use in the late 1950s, this soft, tan powder has been incorporated into many of LE’s industrial lubricating oils and greases. Unlike molybdenum disulfide and other solids used in lubricants, Almasol will not build up on itself and adversely affect machine operation with close tolerances or create hard deposits that lead to housekeeping issues.

Automatic lubrication systems for open gear applications
Pyroshield lubricants can be used in automatic lubrication systems, which apply the lubricant to the bull or ring gear teeth at set intervals in metered amounts. Pyroshield lubricants will not clog the lube system and there are no solids to block or abrade measuring valves. It also will not accumulate on nozzles, clog or otherwise interfere with the spraying process.
