Challenge

Bagley Argentina’s food packaging machine cams required costly weekly relubrication with a competitor’s grease, including weekend overtime and equipment downtime, yet still suffered wear requiring full cam mechanism replacement.

LE solution

LE’s distributor Oil Control S.A. recommended H1 Quinplex Food Machinery Lubricant (4025), an NSF H1 registered, semi-synthetic aluminum complex grease with extreme water resistance, mechanical stability, and LE’s proprietary Quinplex impact-resistant additive.

Results

Bagley reduced lubrication frequency by over 600%, eliminated cam wear, achieved significant savings in labor, lubricant, and repairs, and expanded use of H1 Quinplex 4025 across all production line machines.

The cams are shown 45 days after the first application of LE's H1 Quinplex 4025. The grease is still present and visible in the mechanism, and the cams are in perfect condition.

Customer Profile

Bagley Argentina S.A. is an Argentine food company with its main plant in Buenos Aires. Established by American businessman Melville Sewell Bagley in 1864, the company (owned by the French multinational company Danone since 1994) boasts a wide variety of brands and specializes in the production of crackers and biscuits.

Challenge

Using a competitive lubricant company’s grease, Bagley was performing weekly lubrication of the cams on the food packaging machine. Because the equipment had to be stopped for this procedure, the company had to do the relubrication on the weekends. The side covers of the machine had to be removed for relubrication, further contributing to the overtime labor costs. Even with this costly weekly relubrication, Bagley had to replace the entire cam mechanism due to the presence of wear.

LE Solution

After carrying out a reliability study and considering the operating conditions, Alberto Nasello with Oil Control S.A., LE’s distributor in Argentina, recommended LE’s H1 Quinplex® Food Machinery Lubricant (4025). H1 Quinplex 4025 is an NLGI 2 semi-synthetic grease suitable for a broad operating temperature range. In addition to being a food grade grease – NSF H1 registered for incidental food contact – it is also robust enough to withstand moisture, high temperatures, extreme pressure and other harsh conditions found at food manufacturing plants. This high-performance grease features an aluminum complex thickener base, providing extreme water resistance, excellent mechanical stability, reversibility and tackiness. Key additives include Quinplex, LE’s proprietary impact-resistant additive, and a rust and oxidation inhibitor. As a result of switching to H1 Quinplex Food Machinery Lubricant, many LE customers have experienced longer bearing life, fewer equipment repairs, less downtime and lower lubricant consumption.

Results

A photo was taken of the equipment 45 days after the first application of H1 Quinplex 4025 grease; in the photo, grease is visible in the mechanism and the cam appears in perfect condition. As a result of the lubricant switch, Bagley reduced the frequency of lubrication by more than 600%. They achieved significant savings in labor and lubricant, as well as in cam repair and production failures due to wear. The Bagley team was so impressed by these results that they began using H1 Quinplex 4025 in all the machines used on their production lines.
